Description: Following my time teaching at a Christian university, I spent several years teaching at Lynchburg College, a small, private, secular college in Lynchburg, Virginia, where I used a learner-centered pedagogy, minus the prayer at the beginning of class. I find that my faith seems to shine through most as “caring for my students” before, during, and after class—one of the five research-based practices for motivating students in the MUSIC Model of Academic Motivation devised by Brett D. Jones. In presentation I discuss how learner-center teaching relates to faith integration, provide examples of how I implement this pedagogy, and describe how I am adapting my teaching and faith integration to an Historically Black institution, a challenge for me as I am a white woman over 65 teaching all African-American students, many of whom come from impoverished backgrounds.
