A Prayer for Humble and Truthful Speech, by Dorotheus of Gaza, 6th Century

“O Lord, take from me the spirit of pride and vain speech; give me instead the spirit of humility and truth, that I may speak what is right before Thee. Set a watch upon my lips, that no word may escape me that wounds my brother or leads my own heart astray. Grant that my tongue may be an instrument of peace, my thoughts guided by Thy wisdom, and my whole life ordered toward the love of Thee and of my neighbor, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”

—Dorotheus of Gaza (c. 505–565)

Reflection: Where might God be inviting me to surrender prideful or careless speech so that my words become instruments of peace?
