Azusa Pacific University announces three faculty positions in the Department of Communication Studies.  Details below:

Position #1: Associate/Full Professor in Communication/Graduate Program Director

Specialization: Open specialization in communication studies (including interpersonal, organizational, media, cultural, rhetorical studies, strategic) and/or public relations.  Position begins Fall 2017.

This full-time position offers a 10-month contract: responsible for teaching 24 units, typically 4 undergraduate or graduate courses per semester.  Up to 12 units annually will be provided for graduate program director responsibilities.   Primary responsibilities include the development and implementation of the graduate program and serving as the founding director of a new graduate program in communication.  The program director will ensure academic excellence, coordinate the curriculum and faculty assignments of the program, promote partnerships that support student learning and enrollment growth, and oversee graduate student academic advising.  In addition, this faculty member will teach undergraduate and graduate courses across the department, which spans public relations, journalism and communication studies. Other duties include participating on committee assignments at the department and university levels, carrying out a program of scholarly research, and participating in all faculty meetings. Commitment to the university’s faith statement is required of all candidates.

Ph.D in Communication Studies, experience developing or leading a graduate program, and a commitment to teaching excellence in liberal arts required.

Position #2: Assistant/Associate Professor of Communication Studies

Specialization: Speech and Debate, Rhetoric, and/or Argumentation.  Position begins Fall 2017.

This full-time position offers a 10-month contract: responsible for teaching 24 units, typically 4 undergraduate or graduate courses per semester.  Appropriate unit release will be given for forensics program leadership.  Primary teaching responsibilities include introductory and upper-division courses in rhetoric, argumentation, persuasion, and anchor the development of students’ public speaking, presentation, and argumentation skills in the Communication Studies major.  This faculty member will provide leadership to APU’s nationally-ranked competitive student speech and debate team, and may also coach and mentor adjunct faculty teaching speech courses. Depending on experience and expertise, s/he may teach additional courses across the department’s curriculum. Other duties include advising students, participating on committee assignments at the department and university levels, carrying out a program of scholarly research, and participating in all faculty meetings. Commitment to the university’s faith statement is required of all candidates.

Ph.D in Communication Studies, experience leading a forensics program, and a commitment to teaching excellence in liberal arts required.

Position #3: Assistant/Associate Professor of Journalism

Specialization: Journalistic Reporting and Storytelling, Writing in Communication.  Position begins Fall 2017.

This full-time position offers a 10-month contract: responsible for teaching 24 units, typically 4 undergraduate or graduate courses per semester.  Primary teaching responsibilities include introductory and upper-division courses in journalism, such as News Writing and Reporting, Editing, and Public Affairs Reporting, and anchor the development of students’ digital and print journalism abilities. This faculty member may also provide guidance and mentoring to adjunct faculty teaching writing courses. Depending on experience and expertise, s/he may also assist in advising the department’s student publications and teach additional courses across the department’s curriculum, including in public relations and communication. Other duties include advising students, participating on committee assignments at the department and university levels, carrying out a program of scholarly research, and participating in all faculty meetings. Commitment to the university’s faith statement is required of all candidates.

 

Ph.D in Journalism, Communication Studies, or Rhetoric and Writing, and a commitment to teaching excellence in liberal arts.  Prior experience teaching at the collegiate or university level preferred.

Information About the Department:

The Department of Communication Studies serves approximately 400 major and minor undergraduates pursuing one of three majors – journalism, public relations, and communication studies, and plans to offer a M.A. in Communication Studies in the near future. Our 12 full-time faculty and nearly 25 part-time/adjunct faculty teaching across the communication discipline comprise a vibrant, collegial, innovative department.  As part of the journalism program, the department supports a convergent/integrated media environment.  The outlets include a digital and traditional student newspaper (The Clause), digital and traditional magazine (Collide), a television/online studio (Capture), and an online radio station (KAPU).  Additionally, the department engages a nationally-competitive forensics team, and a national honors society (Lambda Pi Eta).

Candidates must adhere to Azusa Pacific University’s Evangelical Christian tradition. Prior experience teaching at the collegiate or university level preferred.
