Presenter and Affiliation: Dr. Benson Fraser, Virginia Wesleyan University

Date: Friday, September 18, 12-1 pm EST

Description: This presentation examines the purpose and use of both direct and indirect communication as understood by Søren Kierkegaard. My emphasis will be on indirect communication in communicating transcendent truth to an audience that is distracted or disinterested. I will argue that indirect communication can be understood as concealing the message in some way that requires the communicator or artist to help birth self-reflection in the reader, listener, or viewer. Finally, I will then present several indirect strategies used by Kierkegaard in communicating transcendent truth.
