In our “We Stand Together” Statement posted on June 6, 2020, we mentioned the formation of a reading group on Race and Christianity as one action step we could take to contribute to the conversation.
As previously mentioned, we will read texts that you may have heard of but never got a chance to read or process with other Christians. The group will meet about once a month beginning this summer. The discussion won’t be a time for heady theory or moral grandstanding but a time for building relationships and the courage to talk about difficult things. We know that a reading group won’t end racism. But in our vocations as teacher-scholars-practitioners, learning is an important first step.
Our first book is Unsettling Truths: The Ongoing, Dehumanizing Legacy of the Doctrine of Discovery (IVP Books, 2019), by Mark Charles and Soong-Chan Rah. This book is the winner of the 2019 American Society of Missiology Book Award — Excellence in Missiology.
Please join us on Friday, January 28, 2022, 6-7 pm EST for our next meeting. We will discuss chapter six. Even if you haven’t read the book, you are welcome to join. Here is the registration information for this meeting:
